"It is an impressive display. I have seen it many times as I have traveled the Orthlands. The moment when a windspeaker takes flight for the first time. Always it starts off a bit shakey until it clicks and they begin to fly with intent. I had a similar experience with horseback riding back in my childhood."— Tasiir of the People of the Horse
A Community Event
Since the construction of a
windspeaker's kite, is a the result of a community effort the first flight is a community event. Everyone gathers to watch the training
windspeaker catch the wind and achieve kiteflight for the first time. Success - or failure as does sometimes happen - is met with food, drink, song, and dance, as is the norm for almost everything that happens for the
Orth.
Travelers - outsiders - who are staying with the community when this event occurs are allowed to join the community in this ceremony, refusing to do so is disrespectful. Even events like this with a spiritual element are shared with outsiders as part of
Orth hospitality.
Moving Up
This first flight is not the end of the journey for a
windspeaker but a milestone in their development. They still have much to learn and will stay under their master's tutelage for several years to come. However, from this point forward - if their flight was successful - they become more and more independent as their training takes them to distant reaches of the
Orthlands alone.
