Dornam

Mushroom with sedative properties.

"Be careful handling the dornam. If any are near black mushrooms, leave them. We don't want to make a medicine that puts someone into a sleep they never wake up from."

Basic Information

Anatomy

The dornam is a small pink mushroom with a flat round cap. This mushroom is only a fruiting body of the fungus below which permeates the substance in which it lives as mycelium.

Genetics and Reproduction

When the mushroom is fully grown from the mycelium, it releases its many spores into the air which are carried by the wind and may begin a new mycelium if it lands in a suitable location.

Growth Rate & Stages

The dornam will not sprout a mushroom until its mycelium mingles with another.

Ecology and Habitats

A damp location sheltered from the light and rich in fallen wood is the optimal habitat for dornam. It decomposes the materials it feeds on, leaving a good soil for growing crops or flowers. However, doing so exhausts its food supply and causes the dornam to die off.

Biological Cycle

In areas where the winters are harsher, the dornam does not sprout during that season.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Dornam is a valuable mushroom for apothecaries. It provides a sedative that is useful in treating anxiety, sleeplessness, and rapid heart rates - among other things. Growing dornam requires large areas of land near water sources and it must be supplied with old wood. Even with all of these conditions met it is difficult to cultivate the fungi and ongoing attempts to do so often encounter small harvests or sections bare of the mushroom.   A byproduct of cultivating dornam is a rich soil that is sold to farmers to amend the overworked, low-nutrient, fields and beds.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The mushroom appears to sense the presence of light but exhibits no other senses.
