Properties

Material Characteristics

In the raw form it is white on one side and has brown hair on the other. When treated, it is a brown leather.

Origin & Source

In the wooded regions of the Orthlands deer are sought by the nomadic peoples of the region. The deer is skinned to provide the hide while the rest of it goes to other uses.

History & Usage

History

Since as far back as the oral histories of the Orthlands go, deer hides have been used by the people that live there.

Everyday use

The leather made from deer hide is used to make tents, gloves, jackets, and other clothes. The rawhide sees use as well in the form of strips for holding things together.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Deer hide and leather is crucially important to the nomadic people of the Orthlands. It has long protected them from harsh winds, bloody hands, and falling tents. Coats made from the hide are commonly worn for ceremonies and celebrations. When a couple is wed in the region it is customary to bind them together at the hand for one cycle using rawhide strips.

Refinement

The hair must be removed from the hide, this is accomplished by soaking it in water for several cycles. After this time the hair can be pushed off of the hide. The white leather has animal fat applied to it. It becomes stiff after it dries. It must be soaked in water again to become pliable, this may have to be done many times. If it gets wet and dries again it will become stiff again unless it has been smoked. After smoking it becomes waterproof.
