Courtesan

The highest class of entertainment.

"A courtesan is not like the girls you will find on the streets of Lowtown. A courtesan is someone who knows everyone and knows everything that is going on. They have studied science, literature, and the arts. And while their understanding of economics does not rival that of merchants, they know far more than the average person."

Becoming a Courtesan

To gain the title of courtesan, there is a lot of education and training that must be completed. In order to hold their own in a conversation with a client, they must have an understanding of a variety of topics. Knowledge of the famous artists of the past and the present, recent developments in technologies, and the current popular authors and their works is vital.   But simply being smart is the purview of merchants and scholars, a courtesan must look appealing and carry themselves in the right manner. Wearing current fashions, nice perfumes, and using make-up in a skilled way are important things to do. Knowledge and ability to deal with the more intimate needs of their clients is required.   Socially, a courtesan must know when to speak and when to remain silent. They must say the right things at the right times to make their clients happy or to make them look smart infront of others. A good courtesan knows her client but a great courtesan knows everyone her client knows. To gain the title, one must work with an existing courtesan who deems them worthy and brings them into the social circles in which they work. It was not always this way, in the beginning, one merely needed to acquire the knowledge and experience then work their way in. Now however, only a few highly skilled courtesans can operate within the highest levels of society and seek to maintain their positions, making it difficult for anyone without their favor to get into the game.
