Arkun's Bird
"We had been searching for refuge for days in that storm when eventually we found a small island. We saw some birds when the lightning struck but it was a horrifying scene when we arrived. The birds weren't afraid of us, they just stayed there. They oozed some black fluid and it was everywhere and it was sticky. Cursed birds they were. We left, the storm was a better chance than those things."
Basic Information
Anatomy
Arkun's bird is a medium-sized avian with white feathers and forked tails. Their wings are slim which allows them to better maneuver the unpredictable winds in their habitat and quickly dive at fish.
These birds have a unique adaptation to their environment, a black fluid that coats the insides of their digestive system. Some fish are highly electrically charged, which can be fatal for the bird but this fluid prevents the charge from affecting the bird.
Genetics and Reproduction
The birds lay fertilized eggs on any landmass they can find within the raging storms of the Floor.
Growth Rate & Stages
When first born the chicks have no feathers and it takes some times before they can even walk. Around the time their feathers begin to come in their mouths begin to secrete the viscous black fluid they are known for. The production of this fluid is known to kill some chicks as they drown in it if they are not large or healthy enough when it begins.
Ecology and Habitats
The roiling clouds are the ideal environment for Arkun's birds. They rest on any islands that float within the Floor and fly out to hunt the fish.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Fish are the only source of food for the birds, though they have been known to eat their young if the nest is in danger and the chicks cannot escape on their own.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
The birds have eyes but they have almost completely lost the ability to see with them. The darkness of the Floor meant the eyes were not useful except when lightning briefly lights up an area.
They have the ability to detect electrical charges in their surroundings. This ability allows them to catch the fish of the Floor and helps them avoid lightning strikes and predators.
