Identifying Characteristics

The tattoo on her upper left arm represents her connection to the land and her skills as a hunter. The ring around her arm symbolizes the land she walks and the territory she calls home. The arrows pointing towards her elbow represent her focus, precision, and directness as a hunter. Above the ring, going around her arm in order, are symbols of the sun, a wolf's paw, the moon and crossed daggers. The sun represents the cycles of hunting and the passage of time. The wolf's paw represents the power and strength of the hunted animal. The moon represents the hunter's ability to adapt to the changing conditions of hunting. And the crossed daggers represent the hunter's skill and the ability to get the job done. All together, this tattoo represents the warrior's connection to her land, her skills as a hunter, her adaptability and her fierce determination.

On her right shoulder, her skin is adorned with three bear claws that are pierced through her skin, as befits the Nefu'he traditions of honoring the spirit of the creatures they share the land with. Each claw belongs to one of three bears she hunted. By wearing the claws, she displays her bravery, strength, and respect for the bear as a powerful animal and signals her connection to these qualities. It also serves as a reminder of the challenges she faced and overcame, and the strength and power she gained from those experiences. The bear is often seen as a symbol of courage, power, and ferocity and by wearing the claws, she is connecting herself with these qualities and carrying the spirit of the animal with her.

Personal history

At a young age, Vari knew she wanted to be a hunter and a warrior. When she was old enough, she joined others in training with weapons, and followed the proven hunters when she could, to learn their craft. Vari was 19 when she killed her first bear. Vari was 25 when she was heart-knotted to Tige

Life in Mottled Leaf was relatively peaceful until just before her 29th year. For reasons unknown, a plague of gnolls descended into the Steam Marshes and within months, the elders made the decision to evacuate the village to Starlight in the north mountains.

During the evacuation, a gnoll warband caught their trail. Vari, along with the other members of what would be later known as the The Mottled Six, volunteered to create a diversion and lead the gnolls away from the rest of the villagers. They were successful in that objective, and slayed many gnolls, but were ultimately captured. The gnolls intended to ritually sacrifice them to whatever dark gods they worshipped and had started the ceremony, with Tige being the first to be slain. Before the ritual could continue, a band of adventurers discovered the camp and killed the gnolls before freeing Vari and the remaining halflings.
