Imari

Imari of the Book

"Get her out of here!" Veref shouted, pushing the small girl to the ground.

"Veref, that is uncalled for!" Elamin placed herself between the angry shopkeeper and the focus of his ire.

He snorted. "Uncalled for?! She nearly burned down the stall!"

"She didn't mean it."

"I don't care! Just get her out of my sight!" Veref turned away and stalked back into the large hut that served as a central market for the village.

Elamin sighed and turned. "Oh, Imari..."

The halfling lay where she had been pushed. She had not rolled over or sat up. She appeared content where she was, her arms pulled forward, digging shallow furrows into the dirt with a twig. Her free hand she held out and up, her index and middle fingers tapping her thumb in a semi-alternating pattern. As Elamin knelt next to her, she could see that the furrows were tracks through which she was leading two ants towards a meeting.

The elder halfling squatted down and reached out tentatively, lightly touching Imari on the shoulder. The girl tensed, the twig held inert and her tapping stopped. Elamin pulled her hand back slowly, then nodded as the tapping resumed. She leaned back until she rocked onto her rear end, and allowed her legs to sprawl out slightly.

"OK. OK. But when your two friends meet, we'll get up and go back to the house."

The only indication Imari paid her any attention was the slightest of nods.

Elamin looked towards Veref's shop and scowled. "Some people do not possess any decency. Never you mind Veref. He is a sour man, ill-tempered. You did nothing wrong."

The woman sighed as she looked back at her ward, wondering if they would ever find a place for Imari.

For her part, Imari's world had been reduced to a pair of ants, scrabbling through the dirt towards an unexpected rendezvous.

For reasons no one can understand, Imari is able to 'read' the 'Book' which gives her access to several rituals that she can perform with absolute perfection. She can also call upon some manner of magical energy to defend herself. When she does so, however, there is a darkness and glee to her countenance.

Apparel & Accessories

In an effort to shut out the world, Imari tends to dress so that she is fully covered. She does not tend to notice if she is hot or cold, when it is simply a matter of comfort, those who know her leave her alone.

Currently, she travels in a short sleeved tunic, long skirt, and a hooded robe. She adorns herself with bones and feathers she has picked up after Diaka brings them to her, but pays them no mind and they often fall off, forgotten.

Specialized Equipment

The Book might be considered special equipment, otherwise Imari possesses very little.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Imari was born in the fishing village of Midanulabira. Her mother died in childbirth and Imari was passed on to be raised by the Starhunters. As she grew into a small child, the teachers of the Midanulabira Lodge could see that she possessed the signs of being Sagani Lixogi.

The Starhunters tried to find a place for her within the structure of Midaulabira, but the young halfling struggled to find that place. After the fall of the Tempest and the arrival of foreigners, she joined an expedition party that ventured further inland. A Storyteller of the Midanulabira Lodge served as a guide to the expedition and Imari went with as an apprentice.

The expedition was ill-fated and Imari was found wandering the forests northwest of the Forgotten Stones, clutching an eldritch tome. She was brought to another village, who had no knowledge of the girl. However, between her Sagani Lixo and a variety of dark omens that beset the village upon her arrival, she was to be cast out.

That is when the Storyteller Drum took Imari under her charge and ventured forth from Ehlum to learn what they could about book and Imari's place in their society.

Education

Imari has learned enough in her life to communicate and survive in friendly society. Unfortunately, she never received additional training when she came of age, as the Elders could not find a place for her, despite their best efforts.

From time to time, Imari displays preternatural insight, answering questions that no one expects her to know the answer to.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Imari was able to take 'The Book' from those who would have abused it's power. Now she is its guardian.

Failures & Embarrassments

Though the Elders of Midanulabira would never say so, Imari keenly feels she has failed to be of use to her people. She does not feel embarrassed by this so much as driven to somehow find a way to prove herself.

Mental Trauma

For the most part, Imari was not treated poorly as a child. She often refused to associate with other children and was sometimes teased for it, but outright bullying was always caught early and put to a stop by the Elders.

However, as she grew closer to physiological adulthood, many villagers lost their patience with her, often lashing out in angry outbursts, always regretted and apologized for, but burdening her non-the-less.

Intellectual Characteristics

Imari is quiet and reserved. She is often watching, her eyes darting to every movement and every flash of color. If she can focus, she understands anything she is told directly, but often takes words far too literally and lacks flexibility or adaptability when trying to accomplish any task.

She generally does not understand humor, on occasion understanding why a joke would be funny but not finding it humorous for herself.

Morality & Philosophy

Imari considers herself 'good' and tries to do the 'right thing,' but these are mostly things that are expressly taught to her. She often has trouble understanding the nuances of what makes one thing right and another wrong. This mostly shows when the right answer in a particular situation isn't the 'standard' one. She is not devoid of empathy, but in the moment it may not occur to her that she is causing hurt or pain in others.

Currently, her philosophy is that she must protect the 'Book.' There is nothing of greater importance in the world.
