Olivia

Olivia Jones

A sweet and hardworking girl. Olivia started with nothing, still doesn't have much, but she's working for a good life. Books and knowledge are her passion, something she loves dearly. She's decided to dedicate her life to journalism, recording history as it happens. One day, she hopes to write books on the historic things she's seen and reported on. It may take her a good few years to reach that point, but she'll get there eventually.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Honestly, she's the nerdiest girl you'll ever see. She wears a red plaid shirt and jeans. Her glasses are taped together in the middle, not because they're broken but to make them softer on her nose (well, the nose pads broke off). Between them and her freckled cheeks, she has a really cute face. Most days, she wears her hair up in a pony tail to keep it out of the way. It would come just a little under her shoulders otherwise.   On the street, she carries all her stuff in an oversized backpack, filled for adventure. She grew up on rural areas north of Philly, even after college, every day here is still an adventure. She caries her camera, laptop, Xoom recorder (for interviews), various note taking supplies, books, snacks, umbrella, coats, and even first aid supplies every day. Still, the city can make her nervous. She has pepper spray from her dad. She doesn't know it, but its his own special mix. He's a chemist. If anyone were to ever lay hands on his daughter, he would want them to suffer dearly. It is pepper spray, but it's far more potent and long lasting. There's government paperwork filed on it, enough to make it legal for her to carry. Those long hours in the office had to pay off eventually.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Olivia was an unwanted child. Protection is generally not 100% effective and she's proof of that. Her parents had a simple hook up and maybe a little budding love, but a child was never in either's plans. Her mom immediately wanted an abortion, while her dad was conficted. With great debate and convincing, she was carried to term, but things would only go downhill from there, unfortunately. Within a few months, it was clear her mother wanted nothing to do with her. She was left with anyone dumb enough to hold her for more than five minutes. Her mom would then spend the next hours, even days partying or doing really whatever she wanted while poor Olivia and some poor fool were stuck together.   Her dad was initially reluctant, a nervous father. He warmed up to parenthood, but at the same time, he worked 60 hour weeks. He relied on his girlfriend, Olivia's mom to really take care of her. It was a mistake. By six months of age, child protective services stepped in. He hadn't known things were as bad as they were. For a time, Olivia lived in foster care until he could fight to get her back. He agreed to testify against his girlfriend, and to make suitable arrangements to actually care fore Olivia properly. It was a rough few years. He had to leave his job, find another. They built up some substantial debts for a while.   Olivia grew up on thrift store clothes and bag lunches, while her dad did everything he could. Being a single parent is hard. Unfortunately, child support wasn't going to happen. Her mom quickly devolved into a complete deadbeat. Love strikes in odd pairings. Her dad was a motivated and successful man. Her mom was a beautiful performer, who had little desire to work her actual job. She'd have been more of a trophy, arm candy, than a true lover.   After High School, Olivia went on to college. Her dad scraped together the money, somehow. He's been back to working obsessive hours. Sometimes 70, even 80 hours in a week. Most of it now is helping her with student loans while she gets her young career going. She went to school for journalism and has fought her way to every opportunity. Her first job? A position with The Owl. She's an eager, excited young journalist traveling the city for hyperlocal news that matters. One day, she hopes to cover a truly revolutionary, historical event.

Education

Olivia fought hard for her grades, every step of the way. Her dad helped where he could, but time was always tight between them. She graduated with high honors out of high school, plus a few college credits already under her belt thanks to a special dual-enrollment program. Every little bit helped. She's no stranger to burning days in a library to crunch for an exam. Other students were brighter, quicker witted, but not a person in the city worked so hard for their education.   This followed through in college. She went to Temple University, It was easy enough to get to. She considered a wide range of degrees, it wasn't just something she wanted to do, her degree had to take care of her and her dad. She'd sacrifice happiness for him. Something he outright objected to. There was much debate between them, he would only help her go to college if she could convince him the degree was something she wanted for herself, something that would truly make her happy. It's about as tough-love as he would ever get to her.   Journalism won out, with a second major in marketing. The credit requirements for the double major were tight. It was no easy feat, but it was what she wanted. She liked writing, storytelling. Whether true or fiction didn't matter to her. To an extent, Olivia was also a people-person. She loved to be around others. If Journalism fell through, she would use her second major, marketing, to land a more practical job. In the interim, she could land officework with the degree too. Something.

Employment

Straight out of college, Olivia landed her first big job. The pay wasn't great, but it was a start. She would report for The Owl, an on the ground reporter, focusing on community and local news over all else. It wasn't an easy job. She'd have to find her own leads, do all her own ground work. There was no one assigning her to jobs. It was her own job to find stories, right them, and get them approved. The work made her happy though, and it was getting her career started.

Intellectual Characteristics

Olivia isn't the sharpest person out there. She would probably never make it in the sciences or engineering, on her smarts alone. She is however, exceptionally hard working. It might take her longer to get to the answer, but she will get there. What's more, when she does figure something out, she has all the evidence to back it up. it's generally unwise to argue with her. She's slower, but not at all stupid.
