Oh, how I long for the warm sun and the pleasant breeze that I felt upon my skin all those years ago in Alinhas. Never have I found a land with more agreeable weather. It is far too dry here in Aûrkustel and far too wet in Rittsvel. I’d seriously consider moving there myself if it weren’t for the corrupted hearts and minds of the locals.— Ruibreh Luiwichen
The climate and the various biomes of
Lethea, along with its weather patterns and other such phenomena, can appear strange at times, defying man’s understanding of the world and diminishing their trust in the sciences. Such anomalies are often explained with either religion or even with the
aberati and their corruptive influence, and while there might be a hint of truth to some claims, the reality is that all of
Riel and its nature are the domain of the spirits that inhabit it. One of the greatest displays of power that the spirits have unleashed upon the world was the
Drying of the Rahigina, a great transformation that engulfed a once lush grassland with the desert sands.
Classification of Climates
Researchers from across the continent have for hundreds of years struggled to categorise the various climates of the world into a neat system that would be understandable to all. Dozens of different systems have been proposed, but nearly all have so far been dismissed for either overcomplicating matters that are incomprehensible and unclear or simplifying the climates to where they cease to be useful. Out of all the attempts, the Hâleich climate classification has gained the most traction.
Out of all the various climates that exist in the world, the maritime climate that is present on the northeastern shores of the gulf is perhaps the most pleasant of them all. The lands that enjoy such a climate are lush and bountiful when it comes to their flora and fauna and the temperatures often feel just right. These territories have pleasant winters that are kind towards creatures and plants alike, and summers with enough rain to satisfy farmers and plenty of sunshine to nourish the soul. It is no surprise, then, that the earliest signs of
human civilisation were also uncovered in such a climate, around the city of
Last Hope.
I love that the system was written down in a sort of fever dream. That's a nice touch. I love your biome map and this great little article.
