Trivirtuous Faith

The Trivirtuous Faith is one of the most widespread religions in the world. Its temples and priesthood have a strong presence throughout Jirithkae, Freyisdel, and even Ain to some extent.

Trivirtuists worship three gods that each represent an aspect of a good and virtuous life.

Melikh the Compassionate

Melikh is the god of harvests, mercy, peace, and family.

She is associated with all good aspects of a simple and fulfilling life. Trivirtuists most often direct their prayers to Melikh, and she is said to care for all people regardless of their situation or past.

Melikh is the patron deity of children, farmers, and the common people.

Vemer the Bold

Vemer is the god of ambition, passion, and war.

He is associated with all good things in life that require struggle and sacrifice to achieve.

Although he is the god of battle and conflict, Vemer is considered to be a benevolent deity who truly wants the best for his followers and for them to succeed in their goals.

Vemer is the patron deity of soldiers, lovers, and leaders.

Tarinus the Pure

Tarinus is the god of justice, truth, knowledge, and death.

They keep a record of every action that a person takes in their life, and judges their soul accordingly. They are the one who collects the souls of the dead and escorts them to reincarnation or the Abyss.

Tarinus is strict in their judgements and unwavering in their decisions. Only Melikh can sway the god of justice into saving undeserving souls.

Tarinus is the patron deity of the Trivituist priesthood.

Mythology & Lore

Trivirtuists teach that the Three created humans and placed them in Leitoria. For many years, civilization thrived under the care and protection of the gods.

Eventually, some people became dissatisfied with the life they led and desired godhood for themselves. Those who turned away from the light of the Three chose to open up a gateway to the Abyss, hoping that the darkness would grant them the power they craved.

However, the Abyss did not care for its worshipers and instead betrayed them. It poured into the world, corrupting the land and swallowing the sun. Those who had allowed the Abyss to enter Leitoria were consumed by its infinite hunger and were reborn as the nine Archdemons of the Ivory Court.

Throughout this dark age, the gods never forgot their creations. They raised up a champion to fight the Archdemons and finally banish the Abyss. This champion was the Dawnforger.

Wielding the divine spear of Tarinus, shielded by the cloak of Vemer, and infused with the immortal blood of Melikh, the noble warrior slew five of the immortal Archdemons. After healing the fractures in the veil between worlds, the Dawnforger banished the remaining four to the Abyss.

With the Archdemons defeated and the Abyss once again contained, the people of Leitoria entered a new era of peace and prosperity under the guidance of the Three.

Cosmological Views

Trivirtuists believe that those who follow the teachings of the Three and spread their virtues will be given another chance at life through reincarnation.

The most devout followers may even be chosen by the Three to be elevated to sainthood. Instead of being reborn as mortals, the saints ascend to the glorious palace of the gods to live in light and prosperity forever.

However, those who reject the Three and spread suffering will be claimed by the Abyss. Their souls will be enslaved by the Archdemons to be tormented for eternity.

Demons are said to be formed from the dark desires and emotions of the deceased, even those who did their best to live good lives and were permitted to be reincarnated. Demons and aberrations must be slain to protect the living and to bring one last mercy to the twisted souls of the dead.

Tenets of Faith

  • Melikh is compassionate to all. Pray to her, and she may hear your plea and grant you mercy.
  • Tarinus is fair to all. Pray to them, and they may hear your distress and enact swift justice against a cruel world.
  • Vemer is supportive to all. Pray to him, and he may hear your desire and strengthen you in your journey.
  • Purge dark thoughts and actions from your life, for else they will one day return as demons to haunt the living.
  • Denounce dark magic, for it is the essence of the malevolent Abyss and will corrupt the soul.
  • Accept the consequences of your actions and atone for your mistakes, for Tarinus judges a soul by all their deeds

Ethics

Trivirtuists believe that people should strive to live a pure and virtuous life, but not everyone follows the same interpretation of what that life should look like.

The three gods are believed to all embody the highest virtues of morality, yet their tenets can be contradictory. Melikh commands that followers live simple and humble lives without excess, while Vemer commands followers to pursue lofty and righteous goals.

A few priests have claimed to have received revelations from Tarinus showing the truth of purity, yet their accounts contradict each other as well.

Navigating the fine line between humility, ambition, and purity is one of the greatest ethical dilemmas in Trivirtuism. It is a topic debated by Trivirtuist scholars and priests, and many monks have dedicated their lives to searching for the answer.

Trivirtuism and Melikhism

Early Trivirtuism began as an offshoot to the much older Melikhism Faith, and the two still bear many similarities.

  • Three gods: Melikh, Vemer, and Tarinus
  • Gods work together but have different ideologies
  • The Abyss is the direct enemy of the gods
  • Melikh and Vemer protect those who follow their tenets
Melikhism
  • Focuses on national identity
  • One god: Melikh-Vemer
  • God is one being with a dual nature
  • The Abyss is just one of many forces that Melikh-Vemer guards their people against
  • Melikh-Vemer protects those within the borders of Thurnetorre
