Psionics

The ability to perform various esoteric tasks using the power of the mind. The principle behind psionics is not well understood, and it was not until T2 was achieved that reliable means to unlock the latent psionic potential inherent in a number of individuals was achieved.   FTL navigation is currently not possible without the use of a Xenonavigator, a specially trained ESPer who can also navigate through hyperspace.  

Detection of Psionic Activity

  It’s very difficult to use Psionic abilities beyond oneself without detection in public locations. The public's apprehension of actual psis is significant but not overwhelming. At T1 defensive capabilities against psions are present, and on T3 worlds, such protection is nearly omnipresent.  

Psionic Classes and Categories

93% of Psions come in two broad classes: ESPers (or Clairvoyants) and Telepaths. 7% are cataloged to have other abilities, some Telekinesis, but a few other very rare abilities.   Psions also fall into four different ability categories: Augmented, Lifted, Natural and Boosted.
  • Augmented Psions must use some sort MindTek device in order for their abilities to focus.
  • Lifted psions are those whose latent abilities were "turned on" by some particular procedure, often surgical (and painful).
  • Naturals are those who were acquired the ability without assistance.
  • Boosted psions are those Lifted or Natural psions whose abilities are further increased by some sort of MindTek device. The difference between Augmented and Boosted is not insignificant. An Augmented cannot use any sort of psionic ability without their device where a Boosted individual can (but after being enhanced by a device rarely choose to do so - and some do become so dependnt upon the device that they are effectively rendered as Augmented - albeit often rather powerful ones).
