Vikram Avasarala

Vikram Avasarala is Srinivasa Avasarala's only child and Mal Jones's missing father.
Vikram walked out on his family when Mal was less than a year old. Not much is known about him at the start of the series.

Personal history

Vikram had a contentious relationship with his father, Srinivasa Avasarala. As a child, he felt neglected by his father and acted out to receive attention.
He was known for being one of the troublemakers of the Academy.

“You’re Vikram Avasarala’s daughter?” Nik let out a low whistle. “He’s a legend in Waterside. No one’s broken his record for getting the greatest number of detentions in one academic year.”
“Why doesn’t that surprise me?” Mal said miserably. “It sounds just like him. Glad to know his fame has spread far and wide.”

At twenty-two, Vikram fled a marriage that was arranged between him and the Crown Princess of the Naga Kingdom, Lady Inganbi. Only Malcolm Grant, Vikram's best friend from the Academy, knew that he was planning to leave India. 
Vikram then went to New York, USA, where he met Helen Jones. They both fell in love, and Helen had Mal Jones, their only child. Vikram abruptly abandoned them when Mal was less than a year old, and since then, she has always considered him a 'deadbeat dad'.
