Malcolm Grant is a werewolf from England. He is currently a Professor of Practical Magic at Legend Valley Academy.

A tall, brown-haired man in dress pants, a button-down shirt, and a tie, he looked like he could’ve traded places with any geeky science teacher in a regular, non-magic high school.

Personal history

Malcolm Grant belonged to a Traveler family. He’d spent most of his childhood as a Funfair Traveller, moving from one place to another in Great Britain, going where the shows took his father, a werewolf who worked at a carnival.
After his parents' divorce, his mother's married another werewolf and joined the new pack. Malcolm did not along with his new stepdad, and their relationship remained cordial but distant. Malcolm's step-brother, three years younger than him, was also distant. While Malcolm's mother had fit in with her new family immediately, Malcolm never felt like part of the family or part of the pack.
Malcolm preferred to stay with his father, but both his parents were of the opinion that a Traveler's life was not the best future for Malcolm, who was a bright student.
At the age of thirteen, Malcolm got into @Legend Valley Academy on a scholarship. This was where he met Vikram Avasarala  and Laya Avasarala and became best friends with them, forming a little 'pack' of their own. This would change his life.

[Malcolm] had gotten in on a scholarship, and he’d thought life there would be more of the same. His lack of money or consequence was enough to make sure he’d never have any friends among the upper crust.
But then, he’d run into Vikram, standing outside the principal’s office. Mal had been there to complete the admissions paperwork, while Vikram had been there for detention, the first of the year. Only later, Mal had found out that the principal was Vikram’s father. Maybe that’s why he’d so often been in trouble, back then.

Over the course of his time at the Academy, Malcolm developed a crush on Laya, which was reciprocated.

That was how Mal found himself leading Laya and Vikram through the Academy grounds to Mildwood House.
He cast a sidelong glance at Laya. She walked easily at his side, her long, curly hair swaying in the light wind that had started blowing around them. The moonlight lent everything a silvery sheen, and it would’ve been almost romantic, if Vikram hadn’t been behind them, muttering dark curses whenever he tripped over a tree root.
