The Sea Battle of 919 CE
Even before the kingdoms were founded, the Lords of the region around the Silver Sea fought each other for the dominion over the Evening Isles, and after the founding of the kingdoms of Eleonis and Aguilear, this conflict remained a perpetually boiling quarrel between them. On the 19th of September 919 CE it culminated in perhaps the most devastating and brutal naval battles in the history of both kingdoms.
As it so often happens, the conflict escalated when a new King was crowned. The Evening Isles had been in the hands of Eleonis for quite some time, which the old King of Aguilear hadn't been particularly happy about. The old King's son had urged his father to try to win them back, but his father had preferred not to start a war. Towards the end of his father's reign, the Crown Prince had grown quite impatient and frustrated with his father's restraint.
When his father died in the summer of 919 CE, the new King didn't think twice about mobilizing his fleet. He sailed for Eleonis and to war. What he had not anticipated was how unified the eleonian military had become in the first few years of the last reign of House Leandos of Horn Valley. Instead of bickering amongst themselves as they had before, the five lordships of Eleonis had united behind one banner and thus become stronger than ever before.
The two fleets met in the Silver Sea on September 19th of 919 CE. In their confrontation, many ships and their crews burned or sank to the bottom of the sea, and countless sailors were killed on both sides. The eleonian fleet eventually prevailed, and Eleonis continued to hold the Evening Isles. What remained of the nearly decimated aguilean navy sailed back to Aguilear.
In the following decades, the aguileans attempted to win the Evening Isles on land several times, but without success. Eventually, with both sides tired of constantly fighting, a decision was made to negotiate a treaty to resolve the situation. This treaty was signed in 987 CE by the eleonian and aguilean King. The two kingdoms have peacefully shared dominion over the Evening Isles ever since and now have a friendly diplomatic relationship.
