Human

Humans live in nearly everykind of environment and are capable of adapting to nearly every circumstance. They are unusual among animals in many ways, including their way of communicating. Humans communicate by using complex systems of language consisting of thousands of words that are spoken. Though the act of communicating by creating sounds that are heard and understood by other members of the same species is in no way unique, the complexity of human language is somewhat singular. For instance, no other species is known to use a form of communication not only to communicate but also for leisure. Furthermore, humans are capable of solving many (though certainly not all) conflicts verbally.

Additionally, most human ethnicities have developed a system of symbols which represent the sounds of speech in one way or another, a system known as writing, which can also be used to communicate, even over long distances, though that takes time. Words and writing are used not only for communication, but also to record and remember stories and history and even as art in the form of prose and poetry. Particularly in prose and poetry, language is often used with great finess and stilistic creativity.

Even aside from language, almost everything humans do can be considered communication. While non-verbal communication through body language and actions in itself exists for nearly every species, the extent to which this does in humans is unique. Humans do not only communicate through verbal and physical language. Clothes, housing, possesions and even art among many other things project a certain image, either by choice or lack thereof. Humans also create visual art such as paintings, statuary and the like, most commonly showing famous individuals, everyday scenes or myths and stories. It can therefore also be used to communicate.

I like this twist on the prompt! I don't typically think of myself as unique because I'm well... me. But you make a good point that human language and writing are unusual in the animal kingdom. (As far as we know, we're the only animals that have language to talk about language!)

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .

Hey! Thank you so much for the feedback. I am very bad at making up species, so I struggled with this prompt and had to think about it a lot. In the end, I went with unexpected but kind of obvious.
