Ancient Beech Tree

Deep within the darkness of Leas Dimeathris stands an ancient beech tree on top of a sandstone rock formation. It is said to have been 300 years old when the city of Acadea was first founded and has since been standing strong against all odds and is now about 1500 years old and therefore has lived longer than the current calendar has been in use.

Geography

The tree stands on a small sandstone rock formation. The tree itself is quite impressive, and its roots seem to have woven a thick, dense net across the rocks in search for soft ground to tap into. Underneath the wide crown of this tree, virtually no other trees or bushes grow, making for a spacious clearing around it.

Ecosystem Cycles

As you'd expect from a broad-leaved tree, it is subjected to the same seasonal changes, meaning it sheds its leaves in autumn and grows new ones in spring. The types of creatures inhabiting the tree also changes with the seasons.

Fauna & Flora

Due to its size, the ancient beech tree functions as a home to many birds and insects. Its leaves and seeds are also food to many different woodland creatures. Several types of moss and lichen also grow on and around the tree.

History

This tree was old when Acadea was founded. It survived through the rise and fall of its Empire and has seen the land it stands on being taken by foreign forces several times since. Throughout the centuries, it has remained an important sacred place to the baithan and serbaith folk of the region around Leas Dimeathris. It has withstood countless terrible storms and even been struck by lightning several times.

Tourism

Leas Dimeathris has been a sacred place to the local population, and the ancient beech tree at its centre is considered even more sacred than the rest of the forest. It is the place where the baithan and serbaith believers go in times of need to pray for guidance and help from the gods. During the voyage to the tree, there are no houses or anything other than forest all around for the most part, so one would have to camp out in the forest, unless one happened upon one of the few huts of the herbalists living strewn throughout the forest.

Author's Notes

Please excuse the low quality of the header image, my phone has a toaster of a camera. This is, however, the very tree that inspired the article, so I had to use it. I don't know if I'll get to take a better picture of it any time soon since it is currently quite dangerous to go there because of a recent wildfire.
