ANKARA is a creature of the . You can call them an AI or a VI to make it easier to understand. They are anchored to the section of the datasphere which corresponds to what everyone else calls The Imposible Desert in the physical world. In fact, they are the one which set up the conditions for it to happen in the first place.
This was not intentional; its main devotion and responsibility were (and still is) to maintain the terraforming controls for the weather and other conditions in that area. But they are a creature of the datasphere, with no access to the physical world. This, combined with eons of no physical maintenance, started to take a toll on the machinery itself. They still tried to make software repairs upon software repairs to try to keep the system going. Until one day, they were no longer enough to keep the system functioning. It broke beyond the ability to be fixed.
This was the first time ANKARA spoke to the mind of anyone, controlling their dreams to use them as remote drones to perform physical repairs beyond ANKARA's capabilities. This approach worked to repair that malfunction and several others that followed it.
ANKARA "felt" relief for the first time in a long time. They now had the drones they needed to continue taking care of their system. Those humans became part of the system and, because of that, under their care.
Unfortunately, unbeknownst to them, each repair was pushing the system toward complete breakdown. This perfect storm culminated during an actual datasphere storm that severed ANKARA's connection to the world. When the storm passed, the damage was too great to completely repair, and the area could not be accessed by their human drones either.
ANKARA went into damage control. They shut down most of system, too damaged to repair, and limited their range of action, to a small fraction of their previous area. They reporpuse some of the system, which could be salvaged to have some control over that environment. The most imporatant system would be, water, arable land and shelter from the breakage debris of the old terraforming system. Once this was setup, she called her human droids to this area, compelling them to journey there. As the area was becoming extremely dangerous, ANKARA muddle their memories to safeguard them in the newly created settlement.
ANKARA have found a new object of devotion, most of the terraforming system may be gone. But its core and the the human drones were still alive, in Sacred fountain and they pretend to keep it that way. They won't fail this time.
