Track 4: Only A Lad
General Summary
Waking up after an unusual expedition the day prior, Areia and Rilla find some surprises in their rooms. Rilla discovers a small pouch of pixie dust on her nightstand and Areia finds the window in her room has been opened. Not dwelling on this for too long, the girls have breakfast and follow up on the job listing for private investigators.
Following the address on the flier, they meet man named Armand at a local diner. He greets them normally to assuage them the job isn't about any unpleasant. He explains he is the manager for an up-and-coming gladiator named Diego. He cares deeply for his client and has noticed Diego acting strangely in the past few weeks. Armand has placed this listing in a few discreet places around Dagdara so as to not raise Diego's attention.
The manager insists the Diego "is a good kid" and would never do anything illicit, but is concerned in the sudden shift in behavior.
Areia and Rilla accept the position and inquire more details about Diego's schedule. They learn that on most weekdays Diego is participating as a gladiator at the Dagdaran Colosseum, and spends those evenings either training in the gym at the Colosseum or at a private location in the Arbodal Woods. They get the address for Diego and Armand's houses and set out.
Confident in their information, the ladies conclude Diego is away from home and take the chance to break into his home. The house is tidy and somewhat upscale, and Rilla discovers a backdoor patio lock that she picks to grant the duo entry. Inside they find memorabilia for Diego's sports career, a well used kitchen, and an unused sitting room. They split to investigate the home.
While Rilla finds more Diego memorabilia and apparent gifts from fans, Areia finds Diego's bedroom. The room is musky and decorated wall-to-wall with merchandise of famous gladiators. In particular she finds a makeshift shrine to a gladiator named Danger Dorrah with an empty glass display case.
Both girls decide it's time to meet Diego in person and cover their traces to exit the home the way they came. At the Colosseum they attempt to enter the locker rooms but find it's only available to register gladiators and their managers. The simple solution, they agree, is to sign Areia up with Rilla as her manager. Some simple paperwork is filed and "Maulin' Maral" is permitted entrance.
Deep in the lockers beneath the Colosseum they hear the voice of two men, one young and one old.
"C'mon kid. You gotta try harder than that. You can't keep half-assin it like that."
"That's a bad word"
"I know. I know. Just try it for me?"
Rilla sneaks her head around the corner to witness Diego conversing with an animated Danger Dorrah action figure.
