Batai Species in Lanternal | World Anvil

Batai (Buh-tai)

The Majal demons breed their flying mounts for leisure and combat. Batai, or Batclopes, are giant one-eyed bats native to the plane of Lon'Dun. Originally domesticated in the Ecéma region of Lon'Dun. Batai are now found exclusively within Lord Akante's domain.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A round, furry body forms the center mass of this flying mammal. Two short clawed feet provide support for the beast while it is not in flight. Grip strength of these feet are crucial for the batai to roost within their hanging stables.   Long, membranous wings are formed by skin stretched over the batai's arms and hands down the length of its body to its legs. These wings are prone to tearing and damage through overuse, so lotion baths are needed for regular maintenance.

Genetics and Reproduction

As mammals, batai reproduce sexually and spawn via live birth. A mother batai can give birth to one child, or pup, a year. Gestation can take as long as eight months, but never longer than 10 months.

Growth Rate & Stages

A batai pup will nurse from it's mother for several months before it is ready to start flying on it's own. Once it begins its flight stage of life it can begin digesting batai feed provided by its Majal caretaker.   A batai will reach full sexual maturity after one and a half years, and can begin riding at the same period.

Additional Information

Domestication

Batai have been selectively bred over thousands of years to be of adequate size for riding and for superiors wing strength for longer flight times. The exact date of when batai began domestication has been lost, but skeletal and fossilized remains provide insight to the creatures original form. Once much smaller, batai had shorter wings and sparser fur.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The batai's singular eye is of little use in the dim Lon'dun skies, instead the creature relies on a combination of scent of sounds while in coordination of its rider.
