Balafrer Item in Lanternal | World Anvil

Balafrer

A black blade extrudes from a long, twisted wooden staff. Born from a trap laid by Dalibor, Prince of Worms, this intelligent weapon named itself Balafrer.

Origin

In 812 ER Arlucian DeMarquis and Rhoald accidentally entered the plane of Lon'Dun along with Ambrose, Karl, and Chrysanthemum after being pulled into a portal created by Licentious Crowds. After an explosion on the other side of the portal created a vacuum in the dungeonous prison cell, the entire group was forced through into the desert otherworld.   In the past, DeMarquis and Rhoald were once friends, but after Rhoald forsook his oaths to the Triskelion and experimented on human sacrifices the two were driven apart. Eventually Rhoald was captured by the Triskelion and was placed in the prison beneath the tower. Decades of experimenting with dark magic, Rhoald's mind had become addled and undependable. Acting as captor and caregiver to Rhoald, DeMarquis held watch over the feeble man as they reluctantly traveled through Lon'Dun.   Despite his lowered state of mind when Ambrose François pulled a black capsule from the chest presented by Demon Lord Akante, Rhoald suddenly lit and attempted to take the capsule. Noting the man's desire for the object and not knowing the purpose of the capsule the group naturally kept it away from Rhoald. Later however, during an encounter with a group of demons in the alleys of the The Crown of Lidas, Rhoald snuck the capsule away from Ambrose. After the fight DeMarquis attempted to wrestle the object away, but the two fell to the ground breaking the glass capsule. The miasma contained within quickly spread over the two men, violently fusing the two men together. After the black material dissipated, the weapon now named Balafrer lay in their place.   Having lost his teacher and father figure Ambrose blamed Akante for the event, but later it was found that Dalibor had snuck the capsule into the package in an attempt to sabotage the group. Dalibor expressed that even he was not entirely sure of what the exact outcome of the trap would be and seemed to be surprised/impressed at the existence of the magical weapon.

Personality and Abilities

Since the beginning of Balafrer's "life", it was able to telepathically speak to those around it. Alternating between the distinct personalities and voices of DeMarquis and Rhoald at first, Balafrer eventually merged the two together into a new, unique personality. Kind and understanding, Balafrer prefers to listen and learn from the world around it rather than speak out or interrupt. As it grew more aware of the world around it, Balafrer became protective of Ambrose and would often act independently if it believed it would benefit the magus.   Balafrer is capable of emitting a number of magical abilities reflecting its origins as two experienced mages. The sword-staff can produce both flame- and electric-based auras during combat and can exude a powerful heated gust of wind or bolt of lighting a limited times per day. Balafrer's blade is nearly impervious to wear or damage and is strong enough to pierce through most common armaments.
"The writhing form melts away completely into the expanding pool leaving only a long, pointed mass smothered in the pitch. Ambrose watches the object slowly levitate out of the filthy pool dripping in black miasma. He doesn't want to see it, but he just can't look away even as Chrysanthemum holds him tighter. DeMarquis and Rhoald are absolutely gone, vanished into the darkness still filling the courtyard, and in their place floats an ebony black blade extending from a staff of dark, gnarled wood."
