But how do the planes align? They can't align in space, right? So do they align in time? Or do they align in the plain between planes?

Summary

The universe that we see is not the entire universe. There are more universes, called planes of existence, and we can travel between them using planar portals.

The issue is that it takes a lot to keep a portal open. Most portals are held open by tapping into the endless supply of energy called magic. However, even these fail eventually when the local magic field becomes unstable and collapses.

Furthermore, the planes drift, for lack of a better word, causing portals to more or less difficult to maintain and almost impossible to keep them on target for a larger amount of time.

It is said that eventually the planes will align, and even overlap and when that happens our world as we know it will collapse.

Hell, Feyrealm, Elysium and countless others, all containing beings with vastly more power than any of us, now able to simply walk on our lands. Some of them will protect us, some will abuse us and some will destroy us and all will fight.

Historical Basis

An oracle once lived in Erion. They specialised in reading from cards and crystal balls with great accuracy.

One day a child wanted to know about the future. The oracle looked into the crystal ball and the child said that they seemed to turn inky black, and that they voice turned dark like the eyes.

Once the oracle had finished speaking they were bombarded by questions about it. The child recalls that the oracle seemed confused for a while, then something changed. The child was asked to come back with the questions in the evening.

Once the child returned in the evening the oracle had left the town, never to return.
