Erion Settlement in Land of the Ancients | World Anvil

Erion

Rich in history that spans centuries. Too bad some of it should only be talked about in shame.
— Historian of the Dana library

Demographics

The dominant species are humans with dwarves being the minority. There is an elven enclave in the north-western part of Highridge that acts as a diplomatic outpost for the elves in the far east. A group of halflings can be found in Honeyheath.

Government

Erion is part of the kingdom Lerra and governed by lady Hilde von Ileni. She was appointed decades ago and has been steadily improving the city in various ways.

One of the major changes she pushed for was how the local laws were structured. This came about because the laws had previously just been added on top of the old ones, creating a complex web of poorly understood rules.

In connection with this reform also came a reform to the way new laws are written. While previously the lord or lady could just implement any law by their own will as long as it didn't conflict or interfere with the law of the king. The new way involves a council consisting of various members of society with different work backgrounds. This council is there to facilitate discussion and representation when new laws are proposed and they can, if unameously voted, veto laws proposed by the lord or lady.

The council also acts as a jury. If one is assigned on the council one is paid a nominal amount as well as an amount equal to the lost business due to absense.

Execution of the law is enfored by a small number of knights and officials, depending on the matter.

The city and land around it operates on a system of hue and cry, meaning that if a crime is detected one is supposed to get the attention of passers by who are then all supposed to help with the matter and to call for greater aid.

This system has come under a bit of critisism due to the amount of cut purses that are happening every week and there have been calls to increase the amount of guards that are active.

Defences

The main defensive structure is the city wall. It has been needed a few times in living memory. A unique feature is that the wall section that the river flows through is under water, but can be raised in time of need. This wall is lower than the surrounding walls, but is considered enough.

The second defensive meassure is that all people living in and around the city need to be trained in combat, at least either sword, spear or archery. Everyone is also required to bear arms while in public with very few exceptions, such as children under 13, criminals and those who are physically unable to handle weapons.

Infrastructure

One of the structures that have been requested and is currently under heavy discussion is a sewer system similar to that introduced in the capitol to great effect.

Guilds and Factions

There are multiple guilds operating in Erion. These are mostly concerned with specific crafts, such as bakery and blacksmithing. The guilds have over the past years been aquiring an ever increasing amount of power through wealth.

There are also many smaller churches present, and a few larger ones. The largest one has a temple in the town centre and is the church of the ancients.

Tourism

There are very few who come to the city only for itself, most come to it because of some important matter. These are often matters of law or diplomacythat needs to be resolved.
