trial of three arts
History
This tradition started many generations ago when trade routes were not as well established. This was done in order to make sure that the person who wanted to leave the village could do so without worry that they'll get lost and die while also carrying art in their heart.
Execution
The trial starts on the evening of the next full moon, when the participants, judges and any observers come together and eat dinner together. This is done as a way to make sure that all can be together for maybe one of the last times, and it also serves as a time when the participants can be asked where they intend to travel, if it is not already known.
Then the main trial begins with either the art of linguistics, or the art of star navigation, depending on if the stars can be seen that night. The trial of star navigation is about being able to explain how to navigate using the stars and to be able to map them out so that no matter how far the elf travels, they can always find their way home.
Both these first trials are expected to last until dawn, at which point rest is prescribed until noon. Then the second trial takes place, the trial of art. This is when the participants are asked to make a piece of art, commonly a tattoo with a Skin quill, until the sun sets. This piece is then discussed and judged until the last light is gone.
Then the last trial begins. The trial of linguistics is performed by having conversations both in writing, by mouth and sign language in at least three different languages.
Participants
Apart from the ones taking the trial there have to be at least five additional people present:
- The best artist of the medium that the trial takers chose. This person is the main judge when looking at the art.
- The Far Traveller. The person who has travelled the furtherst and therefor has the best knowledge of star navigation.
- The Translator, who is the person in the group who speaks the most languages.
- The Kin Leader. Also known as the master of ceremony, who makes sure that the trial proceeds as tradition wills it.
- The youngest speaking child in the village, who is there to provide the guidance of youth when traditions cannot be fullfilled, for example if the one takeing the trial is physically unable to perform the trial. It is the childs purpose to give many suggestions on what kind of trial would then be appropriate.
Observance
Anyone who is part of the group and has not done it before can request to take the trial, which will then happen during the following full moon.
