The Wastelands

The Wastelands are a massive expanse of destruction and death across eastern Rena caused by the great plague known as The Creeping Shadow, which was created by the followers of Shraenire as a mass sacrifice. The ruins of the colossal city of Casrea are overrun by undead created from the plague unleashed in its heart. A powerful lich resides at the central castle of Casrea, where the plague was first unleashed. Meanwhile, far away, the northern-most part of the wastelands, where Shraenire rose in the solstice, broke off and became it's own small continent. The wastelands are now covered in undead who roam abandoned towns and long-dead farms. Since the plague struck, the wastelands have been nearly untouched by living people, the trees have become charcoal like bark, collapsing with but a touch. The water stays stagnant, full of putrid deseases and disgusting slime. The destruction only held back from taking over all of Rena by the Sacred River created to stop it.

Geography

The Wastlands used to have a mainly medditerarrian and temperate rainforest climate. Since The Solstice of Shadows and the plague, most of that is gone. Now the wastelands are just dead brown and black plains, intersperced with occasional hills and mountains. What rivers and lakes it once had have become polluted and stagnant, tainting all the fresh rain that falls in an instant. The air smells of rot and decay, mixed with the soot of crumbling forests. Barely any color is in sight as the sky itself seems to turn dark on the forgotten side of the Sacred River.

Fauna & Flora

While once the Wastelands used to be filled with life, ecosystems, sprawling forests, graceful birds, and colorful fish, now there is none of that. There is no flora and fauna in the Wastelands because there is no life, all that remains is the dead and the undead. The only animals which remain are monstrosities corrupted by necrotic magic and brought back to life after their cruel death. They are the only things which roam the land, only wanting to take the souls of those who journey into their playground. Shambling zombies, skeletons, ghosts, and revenants roam the land, hungry to feed off the lifeforce of anybody who still has some.

Natural Resources

While most of the natural resources within the Wastelands are long gone, what does remain is the nearly untouched riches of the people who once inhabited them. Within the city of Casrea, hoards of gold, magic items, gems, jewlery, and the like lie in wait. Across the plains and the hills and the mountains are abandoned homes filled with rare ancient artifacts and long lost relics. These many riches may fill the Wastelands, but at what cost can one gain them? Simply put, for most who dare to attempt to evade the undead and steal what they can, they will become undead too, only adding to the armies of the lich.
