Session 19
With our heroes having woken up early in order to attend Matthew and Robert's exam, they soon found themselves in the midst of some aggressive elementals underneath roiling clouds swirling overhead. Before initiating combat, Liaden O'Legal attempted to communicate with them in hopes of finding out how or why they were there.
The nearest elemental, identified as a Living Whirlwind, stated that "The portal is open!" and that "The invasion has begun!" The elementals continued to revel in their new surroundings offering praise to a being by the name of Lord Windgrace and claiming that the mortals here would soon be enslaved to them.
Not liking the prospect of being enslaved for any being, let alone one made of wind, Oryim took the first shot. Though the party managed to dispatch the would-be invaders, they sustained some injuries themselves. Taking a moment to bandage their wounds, Liaden took note of their surroundings, noticing specifically that the winds and temperature were changing. With her experience in the wild, Liaden was able to see the tell tale signs of an oncoming blizzard. One that, considering the party had no cold weather gear, would certainly kill them.
With this new information, Oryim began looking around for any cold weather gear that may be hung on nearby clotheslines, eventually able to snag enough for the whole group. Upon Kalydin's suggestion, the party made their way back to the Bunn Inn to re-equip themselves to brave the cold outside.
As they did so, a pair of guards also came in to re-don armour over the top of their winter clothing, one of them went on ahead to rally the city's guards in hopes of quelling the source of this storm, while the other told the party his role was search and rescue. Taking note of the party and establishing that they were in fact adventurers, he asked them if they were going to help. The party agreed that they would, and the guard wished them luck and safety.
Returning to the frigid air outside, our heroes had the breath knocked out of them. But determination was enough to keep them going. They stayed close to one another attempting to maintain body heat, as they journeyed deeper into the city. Oryim and Liaden both agreed that this was likely caused by the exam that was to take place this morning, and concluded that they should head towards the university. As snow began to fall, our heroes decided to travel Eastward, around the main thoroughfare, to avoid the intense winds. Though this meant that they would encounter denser snow and take longer to navigate.
After what felt like hours the snow became thicker, reaching halfway up our heroes' shins. As they trudged through the snow the heard the sounds of conflict in the distance, while also seeing a fog bank approaching them. Upon closer inspection, Liaden was able to see tentacles within the fog as well a solitary eye that watched our heroes as they approached. Not liking their chances with the tentacled fog, they decided to head to where fighting was probably happening.
When they arrived in the next clearing, they saw three guards fighting a desperate battle against the elementals here. Outnumbered, they were on their last legs. As our heroes rounded the corner to join the fray, the snow had grown deeper still, now just shy of their knees. Wading through the snow, our heroes joined forces with these guards in hopes of saving them, though, sadly, two were slain in the conflict. As the last elemental was laid low, Kalydin rushed over to the last guard. Mostly to heal his wounds but also to inspect him to see if he was good looking.
As Kalydin healed the man, he began to breathe normally in the cold air. Liaden offered her assistance by stitching closed the remaining wounds. The guard thanked them both and introduced himself as Francis, telling them he would help them reach their destination if they believed it would end this nightmare sooner...
