The T'arez Quarter

The T’arez Quarter of the Oasis of the Zayirin is where the heavy industry and mining activities of the city take place. The air is often choked with the smells, dust and smoke from the mining and smelting operations that take place here everyday except public holidays. Thousands of the citizens of the Oasis work in the mines and the smelters to provide the Zultana with the cities wealth.   The mines themselves are highly guarded and people are searched going into and out of the mines, but those without a good reason to be there are prohibited outright. The closest most people get to the mines is when they make the pilgrimage up the side of the mountain to the Obelisk of Zayirinn dedicated to the founding tribesmen who discovered this oasis many years ago. From there one can look down into the open mine pit, and see the activity of the miners from above, although that activity is mostly going into the mine shafts with tools and coming back out with gold and silver ore.   Most of the workers of the mines live in this district, and only occasionally venture out of it, although the foremen and women often lead better lives and have homes outside of the district. The district has just about everything that a poor mine worker could want. Food is served in many small cafes and drink can be found at many taverns. Locals are always surprised to see outsiders in these places as the food is not the highest quality. The mood is often quiet and somber, as the workers have little to celebrate except on holidays.   The architecture is some of the poorest in the city, with the gray mud bricks dominating the single story abodes of the residents. Some stone structures exist, including the guard houses and barracks, as well as the offices of the mine operators. Secret Most of the workers are in fact slaves, although many do not realize it. They are paid enough so that they can purchase food and drink, and pay rent on their hovels, but they are not allowed to quit, or to take days off, and are beaten if they misbehave. Often being chained to their work stations as punishment, and as a warning to those who would think about disobedience.
