Berngor Settlement in Kyrn | World Anvil

Berngor

The village of Berngor was originally called Steam Peak after the dormant volcano that the village sits on.   The village was founded many years ago when it small gemstones were discovered in the area, and the prospectors noticed the fertility of the soil, and brought in others to build a setlet to support their work. After several years, the prospectors realized that the quality of the gems was not great enough to support the mining operation, but that the village was very successful in growing crops. One of the prospectors brought in wine grapes, and soon had a full scale vineyard that started producing some very good wines.   About 10 years ago, a wizard named Ippana Bladestaff moved into the village and set up a small villa higher up the slope than most villagers wanted to occupy. Ippana came to Steam Peak in the hopes of using the volcanic power to assist in his creation of magic items. After getting set up, Ipanna discovered that the heat of the volcano, was too far below the ground to prove effective for his work, so he instead worked to gate in an outsider from the elemental plane of magma.  Once he was able to summon an elemental, and enslave it in his villa, he started working on making the magic items.    A year after Ippana started his manufacturing, he made a mistake, which allowed the elemental to escape. Ippana used magic to flee, but the elemental, enraged at the abuse it had suffered over the past year, destroyed the villa, and then saw the village down the slope. The creature rolled down the slope and started destroying the village as it sought to find Ippana. The mayor and his guards tried to fight the magma leementa, but they died quickly when the roof of a building collapsed on them, and the elemental continued his rampage.   During the attack of the elemental, a retired adventurer, Berngor, grabbed his old sword and shield and rushed to defend his home. After a struggle in which Berngor suffered a severe burn to his face, he was able to defeat the monster and send it back to the elemental plane it came from.  The villagers decided that berngor should become the new Lord Protector of the village, and renamed the village in his honor.   Ippana later returned and said the elemental came out of the volcano and attacked his villa first, but he was not prepared for the attack so he ran away. While Ippana is still in the village, he is less trusted by the locals, and mostly keeps to himself in his ruined villa.   The new Lord Berngor has been working to repair the village's buildings and re-establish the vineyards that suffered during the rampage.

Geography

Bergor is located on the side of a quiet volcano. Years of eruptions in the distant past, have made the land rich and fertile with deep, nutrient rich, volcanic soil. The mountain, which the locals call Steam Peak as steam constantly flows out of fissures near the top and along the eastern side, has not actively erupted in any ones living memory. There are several streams that flow down the peak and through the lands, but that water has a slightly sulfurous taste that the locals have just grown used to.

Natural Resources

The fertile soil, with all its micronutrients makes growing anything very easy, but Bergor is most widely known for its vineyard. Most of the southern slope of Steam Peak is covered in the villages grape vines, which the village turns into a most excellent wine every fall. The other resource that the village is known for is the gemstones that can often be found lying on the slopes of the mountain. They are usually colored stones in the ruby or emerald variety, and most are small and of poor quality. But enough of them exist that several prospectors have started searching for them, in the hopes of finding bigger and better quality stones.
