Scope

The motivation behind building Kuspire

In D&D, everyone plays a character, including the DM; the DM’s character is just a world rather than a person. This world is meant to encompass everything that the players cannot provide alone- atmosphere, history, conflict, to name a few. This campaign and this world is a love letter to the people in my life, and I want to fill it with as much compassion, complication, and care as any real-life relationship.

The goal of the project

Kuspire exists in order to interact with the players as much as they interact with it, and therefore it must be as fleshed out as any good character. I want my players to be able to feel like the world exists outside of their party and their bubble, while also knowing that parts of the world were built just for them or their backgrounds. This project exists so that players can know as much as they want about Kuspire without me babbling on about it for hours at length, while also serving as a resource for myself so I don’t have to try and remember every last scrap of lore.

Kuspire's Unique Selling point

Kuspire is brand spanking new. A massive surge of wild magic spread across the planet nearly 3500 years ago, creating and deepening a intricate web of leylines that influence the planet to an exceptional degree. The same way that Earth has a core of molten lava, Kuspire has a core of raw, untempered magic that leaks out through the arcanatonic plates and too-open doorways to other planes. This chaos creates a unique relationship to magic and distance, while also retaining the familiar aspects of any D&D setting.

Theme

Genre

Historical Urban Fantasy Magic is commonplace and easy to access, even if it’s dangerous, which means that many everyday people have at least some understanding of the arcane. It’s not uncommon for one’s innkeeper to light up the torches with Thaumaturgy or for potions to be sold as a hangover cure. “Minutes to learn, a lifetime to master” is a good way of thinking about magic here; just because most people can create Light with a snap of their fingers doesn’t mean that they understand where that power comes from or the impacts it has, nor does it mean that they can teleport or heal others without significant study. However, the technology level is nowhere remotely similar to our own; most communication is non-immediate and done via letters, and the most common forms of transportation include walking, caravans, hot air balloons, or ships.

Reader Experience

This is not “gritty dark realism”. That’s not to say that it isn’t a serious world, but it’s not hopeless or draining. It should feel mostly comfortable, easy to relax into, but always with a wiggle in the back of your mind that there’s something bigger going on. Magic is commonplace but not well understood, and that should fill you equally with wonder and fear. It should feel new, like there’s a lot of space to make a lasting impact, but with enough rich history that it’s lived in; like a hand-me-down from an older sibling, it’s warm and soft, but there are stories hidden that you have to search to find, whether they be old ones forgotten or new ones yet to be told.

Reader Tone

As stated before, Kuspire is not grimdark, but it’s also not made up entirely of sunshine and rainbows. There’s a lot of brightness in the world, and the light generally triumphs over the dark, but that doesn’t make the things that hide in the dark any less scary. It’s generally a pleasant place to live, even if it’s a bit hectic, especially if you live in one of the cities (most of which are situated between leylines rather than on top of them). Miracles are far and few between, but so are world-shaking, devastating events; everyday good and bad are much more common.

Recurring Themes

Truth, Reality, Perception, and Belief With such a scattered, decentralized civilization, even widespread beliefs have their individual caveats and quirks depending on where one hears the story, and that’s independent of creatures that may have significant effects on one’s mind. Suitably powerful beings may be able to influence the beliefs of others, through mundane or magical ways, or perhaps even reality itself….   Little Miracles Saving the world from an ancient dragon is just as important as helping a kid find their favorite stuffed animal. Little pieces of magic and small kindnesses will always be rewarded, even if it’s not obvious at the time.   Fate, Destiny, and “The World Knows” Some people are tied together by strings on their fingers. Some events will come to pass, regardless of who intervenes. The World Knows what you need, and will provide, even if it isn’t what you want.

Character Agency

It is not difficult to change smaller places- due to the difficulty of sustained communication, many cities are semi-isolated with independent belief systems, governments, and the like, so making an impact somewhere smaller should be relatively easy. Large-scale changes, however, are more difficult due to communication issues; while one might be able to change something significantly across the globe, the impact and feel of that change will certainly not be universal.

Focus

Magic System Kuspire’s magic system is unique in that it is defined by connections- to the leylines, to the different planes, to deities, to various masters, and to each other. Some leylines represent places where the Veil is thinner, and it is easier to cross over into alternate planes; some leylines are charged with a specific type of magic, and are strengthened or weakened by the use of it; some leylines are associated with specific deities, or aspects of those deities; some leylines have certain effects on the people or landscapes around them; some leylines are yet to be discovered; some leylines are just too dangerous to study. But as much as the complicated, interwoven net of magic ensnares Kuspire and its people, they are not simply beholden to the whims of magic. There are masters of magic who are able to manipulate the leylines like a spider on its web, though these are far and few between, and they tend not to stay in one place for too long. Suitably powerful magic wielders, however, can feel the presence of the arcane and sometimes shift its flow to meet their needs, or a group can work together to change a path. While all arcane magic comes from channeling the core of Kuspire in some way (which is why many arcane casters are more powerful near a leyline, but also more likely to be drained), most magic users do not have direct access to the leyline(s) associated with whatever feat they are trying to accomplish. Even if they did, for the majority of casters, that sort of direct channeling of power would burn them up before they were able to use it. Therefore, in order to channel the power of Kuspire’s core without being consumed by it, casters use a series of interpersonal and magical connections in order to sufficiently “dilute” that power. This is why relationships are so powerful in Kuspire, apart from their personal benefits; one’s relationships represent a thin connection, and the network of all of those connections, combined with the leylines and those that are strong enough to use them as a direct source, powers one’s magic.

Evolution and Mutation The only constant in life is change; there is nowhere that this statement holds more truth than Kuspire, where exposure to unfettered magical leylines and strange beasts is rampant and near-impossible to prevent. When a deal with a devil can turn one’s child into a fiend, or helping a dragon can lead to minor magical prowess, it is difficult to conceive of just how much one could alter themselves in a human lifespan, yet alone the lifespans of beings such as elves or gnomes. Magic is a part of the natural world and interacts with people as they interact with it, and it leaves its mark on whomever it touches, friend or foe alike.

Decentralization of Culture and Myth Due to the leylines and difficulty of travel, most pockets of civilization were isolated for the majority of the Post-Surge era. Communication was limited to letters sent between large traveling parties and the occasional visitor or merchant, allowing stories and beliefs to diverge due to lack of interaction. Now, of course, there are more reliable forms of transportation and communication- air travel with balloons, better marked roads, and more protective services, to name a few- but three thousand years of separation will change everyone, even races who live nearly a millennium. Religions have fallen and been created; stories have been forgotten and rewritten; belief systems have shifted and shifted once again, especially in a time where it seems like beliefs are becoming more and more based in reality (or possibly manifesting themselves in reality- the rumors of a candy cottage in the woods have certainly caught the ear of many locals).

Drama

Elemental Plane of Air The connections with the Elemental Plane of Air are becoming weaker. The floating islands that cross the surface of the planet have been moving more erratically, and there are rumors of something important being stolen from the Plane itself in order to engineer a faster form of travel.

Laughing Owl Timberlands People keep disappearing into the woods. Some claim to have seen a pair of children who asked for help, following them down unmarked paths. Some claim to be searching to make a deal, looking for a way out of an impossible situation. Some claim that they can hear the voices of the dead whispering to them form the trees. Some claim that, if you come at midnight, with an offering of cream and sugar, that you will be provided safe passage… but no one’s been brave enough to test that yet.

Unification A group of powerful mages called Arcanazul are trying to unite the scattered communities of Amayath under one system. Due to the decentralized style of settlement, it is rather easy to take control of a single town, but communicating across a vast continent is proving difficult. Arcanazul promises to create more reliable forms of magical transportation, utilizing the power of the leylines rather than trying to avoid them, but most folks are still skeptical.

Return of a Legend Rumors have begun to spread that the dragonologist known as Norros Etoris, long believed to be dead, has returned. Is this some sort of joke, or did the man somehow evade death?
