The Edge of the Map

We call it the Edge of the Map, sure. The dragons have a name for it too. Grave of the Winds is the easiest translation, but a more accurate one would be "Place Where All Winds Meet for a Final Battle." Merfolk and Tritons have it marked on their maps as "The Endless Ocean" and have its borders marked with just about every symbol for danger and death you can imagine. Water-folk always have enjoyed their drama. Not that they are too far off... as far as I know the current record is 3 days past the Salmon River, held by the surviving crew of the Elegant Horizon. Of the 9 rescued all have sworn off sailing, the wizard is currently under observation at an the Asylum, and their accounts differ so widely that all we know for sure is something broke the boats mast and at some point they encountered an island... probably, there was fresh fruit on board, although no one was able to identify they type.

Some ships will attempt to push the borders of the Edge of the Map, but to do so is considered pressing ones luck. It is the only part of the ocean that has never been documented as being visited by the Wandering Docks. Plus if merfolk and sea dragons avoid it ships probably should also. The few successful expeditions have made the crews rich enough to retire, which they all do (at least from sailing) Any sailor's yarn you have heard, from flying islands to talking fish to clouds that eat sails probably exists beyond the Edge of the Map

Localized Phenomena

  • flying islands
  • moving islands
  • moving flying islands
  • waterspouts
  • planar portals (rumored, may explain why the merfolk label it "Endless")
  • Sea serpents large enough to swallow medium sized ships
  • The Hungry Maelstrom (were it not confirmed by merfolk I would call a moving whirlpool that hunts intelligent life a sailor's story)
  • Ancient Ruins
  • A river of freshwater (described as being full of salmon swimming upstream, confirmed by 3 ships)
  • "Magic" weather and violently shifting winds
  • A "lost continent" (purely a fabrication of sailors and explorers I'm sure, right up there with the Fountain of Youth and the City of Gold)
Alternative Name(s)
