Paincoat

"I wore a paincoat for a year when I went undercover. It was heavy, it stank, and Domielle only knows who came up with that design. At the end of my bit, they hit me with a heavy crossbow bolt point blank in the chest to make it look authentic. I swear it would have hurt less if I hadn't been wearing the damn thing."   ~Bligh Widekerrick, Krezzym Investigator

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Between the two thin quilts of fabric, the center layer is a 'chain' mail made up of thumb-sized tabs of scrap metal linked together. This gives the armor a reasonable chance of saving the wearer's life, but not of making them comfortable.

Armor (Heavy)

Common

If an attack against the wearer of this armor misses by two, the wearer receives 1d6 bludgeoning damage. If this damage would reduce the wearer to 0 HP, it instead reduces them to 1.

Paincoat Armor is made up of two thin quilts of fabric sewn on either side of a surcoat made from linking thumb-sized metal chits together. These chits are usually made from either unprocessed ore or slag that the blacksmith can't otherwise use. The armor is heavy, awkward to those not familiar with it, and does very little to blunt the impact of a weapon. The irregular tabs that make up the protective portion are also a bit ragged and it's not unknown for them to become sharp as they clink together with daily use.

The armor gets its name from the pain caused to the wearer on impacts.
