Nulled Ones

Hounds, Ghosts, Priests of the Great Judger… these are but some of the titles given to those known universally as the Nulled Ones. They are beings—humans and elves, man and woman alike—who are incapable of being affected by direct magic, either malicious or beneficial.   Much of the common world holds the belief that only another spellster can be born of those who have the gift of magic. However, many are unaware of the origin behind the Nulled Ones or even of their existence. They are a curious, and often unwanted, by-product of spellster breeding.   The deciding factor of who is born with magic and who isn’t has no logical pattern. A magic-rich noble family in Udynea is just as likely to birth such an anomaly as an unfortunate spellster in Obuzan. All that seems to change is the manner in which these beings are treated.

Demarn — Those with the moniker of “King’s Hound” hail from Demarn. The kingdom contains their spellsters to a single tower complex and any child born there is tested at birth to see whether they react to magic. Those who show no such signs are sent to the capital to be trained as part of the crown’s elite force. Only through surviving the oftentimes brutal training are they deemed fit for a lifelong service of hunting down rogue spellsters. That service includes escorting those born outside the tower to their new lives behind stone walls as well as, occasionally, doing away with those who refuse to be satisfied with such a life. The kingdom’s citizens are aware of the King’s Hounds to varying degrees as well as their task, but their true background is kept hidden.   Obuzan — Although not all in the Priesthood of the Great Judger are Nulled Ones, its position has, curiously enough, accumulated a large percentage of them. Strange indeed given the how Nulled Ones come to be and Obuzan’s strict laws regarding the disposal of anyone with magic. Or perhaps not, if one is to consider how many of the priests started out life as orphans. These executioners are generally sent when a revealed spellster lashes out.   Niholia — “Ghosts” are what Niholians call their Nulled Ones. Not because they believe such people to be dead, but because they are often used as both assassins and bodyguards amongst the nobility and are as difficult to hurt as said spirits.   Udynea — The term “Nulled One” itself comes from the old empire of Domian and, like most things, was adopted by the Udynea Empire as she spread across the land. They are considered as the emperor’s property from the moment of their birth and hiding such people is a crime punishable by death. What they are used for is classified, although there are obvious Nulled Ones within the Imperial Bodyguards, especially around the current vris Mhanek’s husband. Talfaltan — The island folk hold a near-universal revile for spellsters. Nulled Ones born on the island kingdom are just as likely to meet the same end as their magically-inclined brethren. That being said, there have been times when they have worked with Nulled Ones outside of their country, such as the recent culling of Demarn’s spellsters.   Heimat — Because of the country’s lean towards preserving their secrecy, it is difficult to determine just what becomes of Heimat’s Nulled Ones. It is at all possible that the nomadic clans have at least one in their company for the dangerous necessity of countering hostile magic. Note: As of the war, it’s come to our attention that Heimatian Nulled Ones are known as Enforcers. They were once guardians of the Oracles, but are now a specialist sector of the city guards sent after spellster criminals, or forerunners in the army. In both cases they disable any deemed a major magical threat by use of infitialis pallets in their thunderspears.   Tirglas — Given Tirglas and her stance on cloistering her spellsters, it’s altogether possible that the kingdom is ignorant to the presence of Nulled Ones. It would also explain how new spellsters are born within the population without the addition of known magically-gifted bloodlines. Independent Isles — Due to the status of their spellsters being a topic the Isle folk are unwilling to share information on, the presence of Nulled Ones is unknown.   Cezhory — As with Tirglas, it seems unlikely that the inhabitants of Cezhory are aware of Nulled Ones. All records state that they believe spellsters are rare and should be allowed to live a quiet life apart from others. It is entirely possible that only a few Nulled Ones are born into the country at any given time.   Dvärghem — The presence of Nulled Ones and spellsters alike is limited to outside influence due to the distinctly non-magical properties of dwarven bloodlines. Although the testing that was done to the Coven-sanctioned children created to breed magical dvärgar did not include the specific testing of Nulled Ones, the lack of reaction to magic in all specimens would conclude that none bore any of the traits.   Stamekia — Because spellster blood is highly prized to the nomadic herders, Nulled Ones are considered as forsaken and those born of spellster parentage who don’t show signs of magic within the first five years of childhood are traditionally left for the gods to reclaim. In the cities near the Udynean border, these children are typically sold.
