Barriers

Generally, the first actual magic to manifest, the ability to form barriers around themselves is instinctual for many spellsters. Even in those newly born, these barriers can form as a response towards a mild irritant, guarding a spellster against harm. In this state, these shields are brief, dense structures that act on the reflex, often dissipating once the discomfort has passed.   Whilst the most common form seen is a semi-spherical or bell-like structure, the natural look of these barriers is an outline of the spellster, making it almost a second skin that is a shimmering, translucent purple hue giving off a faint glow. Once a spellster has gained active control over their magic, generally around the age of five, these barriers can be manipulated not only in size, shape and placement but also in density and transparency. Those with greater control can also use the barrier as a means to create an additional obstacle, such as setting the outside on fire or covering it in ice.
Applied Restriction
As with all magic, even barriers designed to protect a spellster from harm have their drawbacks. The strength of a barrier, as well as its reach, depends entirely on the strength of the spellster. Those with little magical ability can struggle to form one or even dissipate it, leaving them stuck behind a solid wall with little air. Fortunately for those people, the shield will disappear entirely once they become unconscious.   And, of course, being made entirely from magic, Nulled Ones can walk straight through them. Doing this is as effortless for a Nulled One as walking through air, but the act sends electric shocks through the spellster responsible for the shield.
