Goldsted

Goldsted began as a dwarven settlement when a clan emigrated from Hallava to Mephones. Having honed their skills in mining and excavatation for generations even before they arrived in the new continent, the clan soon grew in prosperity and numbers, and with it, the settlement. Over the next few generations Goldsted became a village, then a town, then a large and bustling city. Today, Goldsted has several large districts, the most infamous of which is the Old District. This is the area where the settlement began, and from which the rest of the city rippled. The Old District is inhabited almost exclusively by smaller races, like halflings, gnomes, and of course dwarves. The Old District's inhabitants are by far the richest and highest class of Goldsted, much due to generations of wealth. The Old District is infamous not for this reason alone however. After all, most any city and even most towns have one or more districts where those of higher class reside. The district's main criticism is its inaccessibility. Larger races of Goldsted, such as elves, humans, orcs, and giants have no access to an entire portion of the city they inhabit. This illustrates to many the unfair and unattainable nature of the rich life. Even if a giant works their body to ruin and earns enough money to consider themselves wealthy, they can never be rich in the way of the Goldsted elite, with their old money, old treasures, old traditions, and old grand houses which are literally inaccessible to a giant.
