Ancient Rubean Language in Kingsmaker | World Anvil

Ancient Rubean

"..."

Rex Tarr, probably
Ancient Rubean is a dead and forgotten language still understandable only by a selected few people.
It was the language of nobility in ancient Rubeus and was therefore already a slowly dying language in the time the last people rose, able to speak and understand the language; the Erubeans.
But there was an issue: Ancient Rubean was a purely vocal language without any written letters. A fancy language for nobility to speak openly in public.
And after the Pulse of Vengance swiped over East-Rubeus in 1000 AS, raising the dead and killing the living fighting the dead, the only ones left standing able to use this special language were people, who got already buried once.
Being dead with no means to speak a language mostly based on acrobatic movements with one's now gone tongue was the death sentence of a language, that was never meant to even exist.

Limitations

As Ancient Rubean got based on single records gathered over years, the language was pretty basic and unable to form overly complicated sentences.
Nobility created custom words within private groups to be able to at least vituperate the common folk properly.

In short: It was a fun code for bored noblemen.
"Ladies and gentlemen, so what is the point of our little language trick?
Sure, I can now insult others heftily, but beyond that?
It is an useless but amusing gimmick, am I right?"
