Purple Priesthood Organization in Kingdoms of the Captive Sea | World Anvil

Purple Priesthood

The Purple Priesthood is the combined clergy of the healer goddess Otrix and her most persistent patient, the mad god Redmera .   Because Redmera has been in the care of Otrix for so long, and those blessed by Redmera are commonly under the healer priests, they've merged over centuries. The fastest way to tell them apart is the color of their robes. The healers wear simple robes of a royal blue color, whereas the mad priests wear amethyst robes.   The Holy symbol for the priesthoods are also merged, showing the symbol of Otrix on one side, and Redmera 's on the other. Otrix  side looks like a silver moon with rays of light coming off it, on its face sits a griffin holding a chamomile flower. On Redmera's side the moon is red and the rays look more like tentacles, on its face sits a griffon with blood on it's talons.

Structure

The dual church has a dual hierarchy.    On one side, the followers of Otrix are very organized, ranked by their ability to heal and split between hospitalers, traveling healers, and local priests.   On the other side, the clergy are disorganized, many factions vie for control, and who is in charge of whom changes from day to day. Only the priests themselves know who answers to whom. The followers of Otrix try to keep track of it, to help in the understanding of Redmera's madness.

Mythology & Lore

Otrix is believed to be one of the oldest of the gods, having attained godhood soon after the forming of the world. She was taught by Yona on how to shape life and by Ythar how to prevent disease. She has always been the greatest of healers.   Redmera, on the other hand, has a history shrouded in mystery. It is known she was a god before she went mad, but no one remembers what she was in charge of. Supposably she saw something so horrible that it fractured her mind. This is the problem Otrix faces in healing her, when she gets her close to sane the memory returns and she loses it again.    It is said that Redmera's healing will only happen when the world comes to its end. Redmera is said to beg Otrix to leave her be, for the world's sake, in her more lucid moments.

"Until all are set right."
