SER Class A5

The South Eastern Railway A5 Class was a class of four 0-6-0 goods locomotives built by Adcock, Bäcker & Robertson with the first three being delivered in 1869 and a fourth following five years later in 1873. The locomotives were initially ordered to run on the Poolside to Bromford line where they pulled goods trains that mostly consisted of coal from the Ayers Colliery Company.

In 1902, the class were rebuilt as 0-6-0Ts becoming the SER Class A1(1902). They gained side tanks, a fully enclosed cab and a small coal bunker. This was done to provide some shunters for the company while an order was being placed with Sinclair, Addams & Co. for some engines of the same overall wheel arrangement. These rebuilds were all scrapped by 1924.
