Maria Louise
Princess
Maria Louise was daughter of King Robert I of Argentina and Queen Maria Pia. During the overthrow of the Emperor of Brazil, Emperor Pedro II negotiated Argentine troops for restoration by arranging a marriage between Maria and one of Pedro's grandsons. Maria married Dom Augusto when the two became of age, becoming the Princess of Brazil in 1888.
Princess Maria suffered from health issues from the start. After the birth of Princess Isabella Christina in 1893, her health declined further, having had four children in five years. The Augusto attempted to gather the best physicians in Brazil, and though Maria recovered for a time, she ultimately passed away in 1894. Heartbroken, Augusto, upon becoming Emperor himself in 1898, ordered the construction of a mausoleum and memorial in her honor. The Memorial de Maria became a landmark for all Brazilians.
