Louis III
King Louis
Louis III was King of the Kingdom of Holland upon the death of his father, Louis II, in 1871 until 1897.
During his reign, he oversaw growing tensions between Holland and Great Britain. Holland had discovered diamonds in their holdings in Africa, and British diamond magnates attempted to filibuster. When Britain refused to remove their colonists, Louis addressed the Dutch Parliament, and war was declared. Louis shocked the entire world as Holland defeated the British in 1881, solidifying Dutch holdings in the region.
Louis also sent representatives to the Berlin Conference in 1884, wishing to expand his holding further south in Africa. However, he only managed to gain territory to the north. He did, though, gain support from the German Empire.
