Hungary

The Kingdom of Hungary is a nation in Europe bordering the German Empire, Poland, Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Transylvania, and Czechoslovakia.

History

As a part of the Austrian Empire, Hungary recieved a special status as an equal member in 1867 following their defeat in the Austro-Prussian War. Following the war, Austria-Hungary looked south into the Balkans for expansion. While initially supported of the proclamation of the German Empire, Hungary, much like their Austrian counterparts, grew wary of German dominance in Europe.

Even with the attempted assassination of Archduke Leopold in Sarajevo, Hungary opposed going to war. Instead, Tsar Nicholas I of Ukraine agreed to lead an investigation. Unsatisfied, Austria and Ukraine would convince Bulgaria to go to war with Serbia. The chain of events and failed diplomacy thereafter was a contributing factor of the Great War. With their loss, and the ascension of Leopold to the role of Emperor, the nation was forced to undergo reforms into the Habsburg Confederation. Hungary protested the reforms, as it saw many of the land it claimed as its own be taken away and formed into new states. However, with their loss in the 1922 Revolution, and the reforms were forced upon them.

With the death of Emperor Leopold and the ascension of Emperor Franz Karl, the Confederation began to fall apart. Hungary was among the states who declared independence, with Archduke Carl von Habsburg taking the crown of Hungary as a union with Romania fails. Carl is unable to claim the region of Transylvania from Romania, as the Great Powers were ambivalent to either side's desires. Transylvania was then made an independent nation.

Hungary still claimed lands that had been granted to other nations, such as Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. This caused great tensions between their neighbors, with Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and Romania creating a defensive alliance to contain their territorial ambitions. When the Russo-German War begins, Hungary had hoped to claim Slovakia, but Czechoslovakia did not enter the war, and thus Hungary had no casus belli.
