Alfonso
Count Alfonso
Alfonso was son of Ferdinand II and brother of Francis II of the Two Sicilies. With the Unification of Italy and the othrowing of the Sicilian monarchy, Alfonso accepted refuge in Argentina, where he was made Count of Rosario by King Robert I.
Alfonso entered the Argentine court as a prominent member of the Italian voting block. With the elections of 1892, as well as 1896, he was appointed as Prime Minister. The Italian nobles had worked to gain land rights in the newly acquired regions of Patagonia, where they became the new elites. Italians grew to dominate the Argentine court, with Alfonso playing a leading role.
Like many of the Italian elite, Alfonso was forced into hiding during the Argentine Revolution. He supported Elias to succeed Robert as King, but questioned the amount of social concessions needed in order to quell the citizenry.
