Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was a kingdom in southern Italy consisting of Naples and the island of Sicily.
History
The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was formed after the wars against Napoleon. The nation was formed from the combination of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Naples and the Kingdom of Sicily.
During the Springtime of Nations, Sicily was similarly forced to suppress revolutions against the autocratic rule of Ferdinand II. In 1849, Pope Pius IX was also overthrown in favor of a Roman Republic, and took refuge in Naples. The Two Sicilies went to war against the Republic in order to restore the Pope. The Two Sicilies recieved multiple defeats, but also crippled the economics of the Roman Republic. The Republic ended the conflict by joining the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia.
Disbandment
In 1860, the nation went into turmoil once again. Capitalizing on this, Giuseppe Garibaldi of Piedmont landed in Sicily with a force of 1,000. Virtually unopposed, Garibaldi would swell his forces to 50,000 as he conquered Siciliy and invaded Naples. The royal family took up refuge in Argentina, where they accepted titles equal to their Italian ranks, creating a class of Italian elites.
