Personal history
Though he is now honored throughout Khthon, beautified by The New Canon Church of Orion, and nearly deified in his home city of Bastion, Saint Gwyn the Dauntless was born an ordinary fisherman's son with no particular indications of future greatness. In fact, even four days before his death, he was a quietly competent but otherwise unremarkable guardsman. Perhaps as a true reflection of his rather run-of-the-mill origins or perhaps because it adds to the mystique of his story of stepping up and becoming so much more, there is very little information available about his life. The location where the shack where he grew up in once stood is marked, and the room of the barracks he occupied while serving the city guard has been converted into his most holy shrine, but almost no details remain. Interestingly, although he is more frequently worshipped in Bastion than anywhere else, none but his direct clergy use his title of Saint. To the people of Bastion, he will always be Sir Gwyn of the North Gate, posthumously knighted and retroactively named founder of the Knights of Bastion. Both at home and abroad, he is very popular both for his heroism and sacrifice, and as the exemplar of the idea that not all knights are trained or born. Some knights are forged in a single moment. That Saint Gwyn's moment lasted three days is seen as an enhancement to his qualification in this regard and proof of his knightly virtue rather than disqualification. It's held that he earned the spurs he never wore in the very moment he took up his position in the north gate, though it's left unsaid whether or not he would be remembered as fondly if he hadn't lasted until the city could rally and reinforcements began to arrive.
