Bastion

Government

Many years ago there were Dukes and Duchesses of Bastion who ruled the city and the island it sits on along with their court. They did so first in fief to whichever petty king controlled Godseye at the time, and power transferred seamlessly to the king of Albion after unification. Then came the Lady of Bones. The dukes and duchesses would maintain their titles for a few generations, but from the moment the dead started rising on the isle all real authority was ceded to the Knights of Bastion as the nobility fled to Godseye. Technically the city has remained under martial law ever since, but in practice the knights keep the conflict far enough from the city that it functions much like any other, simply subject to immediately change if the knights deem it necessary.

Defences

The walls and towers of Bastion are the second highest in the Kingdom of Albion, losing out only to the literally miraculous defenses of Mourninghold. In thickness they actually win the competition, though their human construction means its more out of necessity than pride. The most distinctive feature however is how far the walls extend into the surrounding waters, the city's defenders and architects having long since learned what is necessary to defend against the undead.

Industry & Trade

There are civilian industries in the city and its few outlying villages and hamlets, but overwhelmingly Bastion is a city of war. A full third of its industry supports the navy, a tenth is earmarked for the knights of bastion, and a quarter goes towards the city "militia." Accounting for the various other knightly and military obligations leaves only around a fifth of the city's industry unrelated to training, equipping, and supporting fighters.

Infrastructure

In order to keep the port of Godseye as open to trade as possible, Bastion serves as the primary port for the Navy of Albion, sporting among the most and finest shipyards in the kingdom spread across its expansive port. Between the navy, the Knights of Bastion, and the city "militia," an enormous portion of city's infrastructure and business is oriented towards supporting military endeavors. You can find a blacksmith to forge nails and horseshoes, but its far easier to find them working on swords and spearheads.

Assets

Bastion's primary assets are its enormous docks, the port stretching from one edge of the city to the other, without an inch of coastal real estate wasted on anything else.

History

Bastion was not always the northernmost of Albion's cities, just as its island was not always called the Isle of the dead. In the same inciting incident, everything north of the city's north gate was transmuted into a horrifying necrotic hellscape, and everything dead began to rise again in service to the Lady of Bones. Ever since, the city has been pulling double duty as one of the kingdom's most important holdings, serving as headquarters for the majority of its navy and the bulwark preventing the undead from leaving the island and spreading across Khthon. The first function is much older and, on a given day, more important to the kingdom, but it is far and away the second which gives the city its reputation. On those days when it is the more important concern, it is a reputation that is certainly earned, paid for primarily in blood.
