Dauntless

History

Dauntless was one of thousands of unadorned but good quality longswords churned out at a breakneck pace shortly after the humans of Albion mastered the smelting and forging of iron. It was loaded unceremoniously onto a pallet with hundreds of near perfect clones and shipped to the city of Bastion as part of a royal initiative to arm and armor the soldiers protecting the military heart of the kingdom as well as the great knights of other nations. Some attribute the project to some sort of prescience or obsession with preparation on behalf of King Trenton Wyr XII but in reality it's well recorded that it was more a concern of power projection and prestige, or even vanity, than any thought towards the potential crises that would soon lose its potentiality. It was during that crisis that Dauntless would be elevated its first step towards greatness, it had been assigned to a humble guardsman but on the day the dead rose and for a desperate three day defense of the city's great northern gate it would re-slay thousands of undead in the hands of the man who would become Saint Gwyn the Dauntless. It is from him that the sword takes its name, and from his beautification that the greatest portion of its power flows, but the foundations were laid through repeated and violent contact with the necromantic energies of the undead. The patron saint of the city of Bastion famously died of exhaustion at the end of the third day of his stand, and neither his body nor his equipment could be recovered from beneath the swarms of undead, but the sword would resurface occasionally throughout the conflict, even before Gwyn was beautified, a sure sign of its developing magical potency.

Significance

In addition to the inherent importance of a unique and powerful artifact, and even above the eternal desperate need for potent weapons against the scourge of undeath, Dauntless serves as a symbol nearly as much as the man who wielded it, for the city of Bastion, The New Canon Church of Orion, and for all Khthon's righteous protectors.
