Great Debasement

In late Jandar 904 LC, king Olyxx the Young of the Kingdom of Laeryll decreed that existing elven currency would be free to trade with outsiders. This had been taboo in the preceding millennium, as the elaborate designs and rare materials used for elven currency made them too valuable for outsiders. Trading them would have disrupted the elven economy.   Yet this disruption was now exactly what Olyxx wanted. The Declaration of War Against the Labarean Empire by the Kingdom of Laeryll had placed the kingdom in need of capital and Olyxx wanted the elites to sell of their amassed elven currency. Additionally, he wanted to move away from the standing practice of using Labarean coins for international trade: he had long had plans to mint new coins, of much lesser value than the old ones, that could substitute Labarean currency. By first allowing a sell-off of the old currency, Olyxx kept the Laeryllian elites happy and gave himself the opportunity to hire mercenaries from outside the kingdom. The second step in his plan would be to start minting new coins, to make Labarean currency illegal and then to smelt remaining Labarean coins in order to mint new Laeryllian coins.
