Zoluren Expeditionary Force

The standing army of the Province of Zoluren, under the leadership of the Lord Commander of the Zoluren Expeditionary Force, Viscount Grombrindal.

Structure

Beneath the Lord Commander, there are three separate and distinct groups, each overseen by a Supreme Commander, and commanded in the field by a subordinate commandant.  The supreme commanders focus on long-term strategy and logistics, and they remain in River Crossing except in unusual circumstances.  This system serves to keep the army functioning smoothly and prevents top-level miscommunications.

The Expeditionary Force is broken into three armies, known as The Anvil, The Hammer, and The Forge.

The 1st Army: The Anvil.
Boasting soldiers conditioned for stamina, the Anvil is called upon for protracted engagements. In theory, the 1st Army engages and ties up enemy forces across large areas until the Hammer is ready to strike at full strength from the flank. The officers of the Anvil consider themselves to be Zoluren's foremost experts on extended siege warfare. The 1st also provides an active reserve through which veteran soldiers can be rotated off the front line to recuperate close to the battlefield.

The 2nd Army, the Hammer.
The Hammer focuses on delivering crushing offensives and therefore includes the largest number of assault legions, siege equipment, cavalry, and heavy infantry of the three armies.  For these reasons, the 2nd currently reigns as the most esteemed of Zoluren's armies; indeed, most recruits seeking action ask to be assigned to The Hammer.

The 3rd Army, The Forge.
Responsible for training and arming new recruits (and, ostensibly conscripts, should the need arise), the 3rd Army also maintains garrisons in Zoluren cities and oversees the five border legions that safeguard Zoluren's vast perimeter. The Forge makes use of numerous training facilities; in fact, the city of Stormhold is almost entirely dedicated to military preparedness.
By some measures, the Forge is not a single fighting force. Along with the border legions, it comprises six distinct elements that enjoy little contact one another. The 3rd retains the dubious distinction of being the most far-flung army in the nation. Its soldiers operate as far northwest as the Faldesu River and as far south as the Great Divide, nearly 1000 miles apart.
Garrisoning Zoluren's interior is by and large the easiest and least dangerous assignment in the army. Such a posting bestows very little prestige, yet it is highly desired by those with strong ties to family, such as young fathers. Recent years, however, have seen many unexpected threats challenge the Zoluren interior, making the defense of cities both more vital and more dangerous than ever before.

Demography and Population

Though there are soldiers of every race present within the Expeditionary Force, the large majority, around 700,000, are human.  The largest minority amongst the rest are Halflings, many of whom volunteer in hopes of learning to protect their home of Arthe Dale.

Elves are not common amongst the Expeditionary Force, as they often serve in the ranks of the Elven Army, under Morganae, the Undying Queen in Leth Deriel.
