Sandstone Flats
The Sandstone Flats are a vast and nearly featureless stretch of terrain located just to the east of the Black Spires and to the south of the Velakan Desert’s central expanse. This region is defined by its soft, reddish sand and the towering formations of eroded sandstone pillars that rise sporadically from the desert floor. Unlike the rolling dunes of the rest of the desert, the Sandstone Flats are relatively flat and open, making them a treacherous expanse to cross for travelers who are unprepared. The wind sweeps across this barren land in gentle waves, often causing the fine dust to swirl into unpredictable whirlpools, making navigation difficult and disorienting.
The Flats, though seemingly desolate, hold a kind of strange beauty. The colors of the sand shift throughout the day, from pale pinks and dusty oranges at sunrise to deep purples and reds as the sun sets, casting long shadows across the land. During twilight, the sandstone formations catch the light in such a way that they glow faintly, illuminating the Flats with an eerie, otherworldly radiance. Few have dared to settle here, but the area is not entirely devoid of life. There are rare creatures, often nocturnal, that have adapted to the harsh environment. These include small desert-dwelling lizards, rodents, and hardier forms of plant life that can survive the unrelenting heat.
Despite the seeming lack of activity, the Sandstone Flats are known to harbor hidden dangers. Beneath the sand, ancient ruins from a long-forgotten civilization have been uncovered by shifting winds and time, and some of these remnants are said to be cursed. It is believed that certain parts of the Flats are haunted by restless spirits of those who lived there before the desert claimed the land. Many adventurers have ventured into the Flats searching for treasures, only to disappear without a trace. The Flats’ desolate beauty hides its perils, and travelers must tread carefully through its vast expanse, for one wrong step could lead them into an ancient trap or worse.
