Representative

Representatives are, true to their name, the representatives of their people in the United Galactic Federation's Council. At the start of the UGF's existence, they were the highest ranked members of the organization, but later more conducting members were added to ensure all Representatives could do their work properly. Likewise, the exact definition of the Representatives was also changed to be more clear as time went on.

Career

Qualifications

Though there are technically no required qualifications on the role of Representative, they must be chosen by their people to represent them. In most cases, this is done via an election of some sort, be it among the entire population or only among their highest-ranking leaders, but exceptions are known to exist. As they thus need to be chosen, by it by their people or by a specific person, they likely must have some sort of skills or education that makes them a good choice for the role.

Career Progression

All Representatives are equal. That is a key part of their job, to ensure that everyone--and all people--are on equal standing. However, they don't need to do their work alone, and may receive aid in the form of guards, assistants, and yes, juniors who are training for the possibility of being chosen as the next Representative.

Payment & Reimbursement

As high-ranking members of the UGF's legal structure, Representatives are well-paid... but not overly so. They represent their people, and are thus expected to make a living not much more extravagant than said people. It is important to the work that the people who work as Representatives don't do it for the money, but for the good they can (and should) do.   While they are working as Representatives, all financial ties must be known to the UGF, and cut wherever possible. A Representative that has a big share in a major company, for example, might show bias to that company. Keeping these secret comes at severe punishment, if discovered.

Other Benefits

Representatives are widely acknowledged due to their sheer political power. While the role comes with significant fame, said fame is tightly bound to how well the Representative did. Someone who goes for the role while only desiring the power or fame it will give them, will likely ruin their reputation, and get replaced quickly on top of that. Those who well, however, are often immensely popular among their people.

Perception

Purpose

Representatives were essential during the Second Age to ensure the people they came from were represented in the larger-scale galaxy. Without them, smaller and less powerful planets and species were at risk of being lost or overshadowed.

Social Status

Essential to their people, Representatives (both current and former) are well-known, though whether that is positive or not depends very much on how well they did their work. Their overall perception varies per species and culture, with some restricting Representatives to those already in higher castes, whereas others find it more important that their Representatives come from the actual people they are meant to represent.

Demographics

Each people only has a single Representative at a time, though others may work as juniors to assist the one chosen. Representatives can be replaced fairly often if needed (or desired), so a population may hold quite a number of ex-Representatives.

History

In some ways, Representatives actually predate the UGF, and even the Second Age altogether, although the actual profession (and matching title) are inherent part of the UGF. Before, they were mostly considered ambassadors, but also negotiators, and sometimes even worked as military. After all, the reason why all these people were working together was to fight back against the Progenitors, and cooperation and coordination was essential to such a thing. It is likely that this is what inspired the formation of the UGF's Council, with each people picking their own representative.
