Grenmarr Organization in Karth | World Anvil

Grenmarr

The relatively small area claimed to be part of Grenmarr is less a kingdom in practice and more a group of semi-autonomous tribes, villages, regions, and lesser nobles all ruled by a Kral, in this case, Kral Ufisson. Grenmarr extends along most of the southern border of North Adron. The kingdom's borders end some hundred miles or so north of the coast, the space between that and the Everfrost Forest is unclaimed wilds where only the heartiest of souls survive the barbarian tribes and vicious monsters that prowl the tundra.

History

Grenmarr got it's beginning when an ancient people from an unknown land to the south, made landfall on the southwestern coast of North Adron. Known as the Bonthars, most of their history before this time is lost although there are writings that suggest they were fleeing a great calamity of some nature. Led by a woman named Una Thorod, the Bonthars began to eke out a meager existence fighting the elements, beasts of every kind, and tribes of barbarians that were native to the frozen tundra. Eventually Una united most of the tribes and brought them to heel under one banner, establishing a ceremony for choosing rulers still practice today known as Krueg.
The original landing site of the Bonthars became the capital city of what is now called Grenmarr and the city began to flourish. The town continued to grow and things continued toward prosperity for several generations. That is until the development and expansion of the city awoke an ancient evil, Malachor.
Although a lesser demon, Malacor was demonic nobility nevertheless and extremely powerful. He slumbered under the ice and snow for eons until being awoken by those on the surface. Filled with spite and hatred, Malacor plotted in the dark. Eventually, he gained enough strength to lay siege to the town, killing thousands.
As soldiers and warriors did their best to hold the walls and citizens cowered in their homes, a counsel of wizards decided that their own hope was escape. In an effort to save all they could, they opened a portal and neither slept nor ate to maintain the spell. Unfortunately due to their weakened state, the portal exited only a few hundred miles away, in an area that is currently the town of Athadover. Hundreds made it through the portal before the walls were breached. Eventually, the portal was sealed as it was deemed too dangerous to leave open.
Those that passed through did their best to start anew, and began to build a new village, eventually resulting in a new capital. The portal, for its part, was buried in the bowels of the city, covered over and those that lived above almost entirely forgot about their near extinction. The former site of the old capital, now ominously dubbed the Shore of Graves, is an uninhabited wasteland where even the barbarian tribesmen refuse to tread.
