The Grand Underground Gardens of the Guilds
a.k.a. Guilder Gardens
Purpose / Function
The system of underground gardens commonly refered to as Guilder Gardens was constructed shortly after the manufacturing of the UAG colony world of Kataan as a way to keep the colonists supplied with fresh food. The near constant monsoon weather on this world makes it impossible to grow crops on the surface of Kataan. In fact, the entire settlement exists underground.
The crops are grown hydroponically, making use of Kataan's abundance of rain water delivered through a complex system of pipes from the surface. Guilder Gardens boasts a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as beautiful fragrant flowers, from all over Kantostara, all of which are available to the residents of Kataan free of charge. This is widely advertised as one of the perks used to attract new colonists and to compensate for the lower wages paid to workers here by the United Association of Guilds.
Guilder Gardens is not only functional for providing food, but it is also beautifully landscaped with cozy little seating areas for residents to enjoy. In fact, breathtaking images of these gardens have been used in so many of the Office of Colonization's recruitment campaigns that Guilder Gardens has come to symbolize Kataan in the minds of many, conveniently down playing some of the harsher aspects of life on this world.
Alterations
Not long after the construction of Guilder Gardens, the entire underground system was destroyed by vicious little amphibious creatures called shrieking grounders who devoured everything. Grounders are prolific breeders, so when their natural predators were wiped out by the cataclysmic weather changes brought on by the manufacturing of Kataan, their population exploded alarmingly. Since grounders burrow into the ground, they were able to break into all of the structures and terrorize the colonists. Everything had to be rebuilt, including Guilder Gardens, using new techniques developed to enclose the underground structures in a protective shell that the grounders couldn't penetrate.
Today, the shrieking grounder population is kept under strict control, and grounders have become the main source of meat protein on Kataan. They are usually served sauteed with vegetables and aromatic herbs that are grown in Guilder Gardens.
